The TLDR (or should it be TLDL?) version episode is this: Like the early Christians, we now face a New Frontier (internet, social media, etc.) for evangelization (sharing our faith). Like the early Church, we must rely on Peter’s domestic Church and Paul’s missionary Church in order to grow.

Each version feeds off of each other. If that doesn’t make any sense, press play.

ATHEIST: “But then who designed the Designer?”
THEIST: “Nobody.” (Or perhaps: “I don’t know.”)
ATHEIST: “Well then you have explained nothing.”

The above question represents a common conversation between theists and atheists across all ages. We take a stab at it ourselves…

Can something come from nothing?

  • Science: Conservation of Mass/Energy
    • In experiments everything must be accounted for
  • Philosophy: Principle of Sufficient Reason
    • Presupposition for all thinking and knowing
    • Cannot prove- have to presume it to be true in order to do so
  • In the real world things do not just appear or disappear
  • To say the world appeared magically or without reason results in a nonsensical claim.

If God is the cause of our Universe, who/what caused God?

  • Everything we experience in life has a cause
  • If God were caused there would be an infinite regress
  • God is first cause- without a first cause you cannot have a second cause, third cause, …
  • God is
    • uncaused
    • necessary being
    • exists by definition
    • does not have existence added to his essence
    • source and cause of existence of everything else

(Not quite correct to call God the cause of himself- implies prior existence)

Distinction between essence and existence and why they are distinct in us and not in God?

  • Whatever a thing has besides its essence is caused either by that essence (from within) or by an exterior agent (from without).
  • Essence associated with ‘What is man?’ (answered by a definition)
  • Existence associated “Is there a man?” (not answered by a definition)
  • If God’s essence is not his existence, then he would have to get it from within or without.
  • Not from exterior agent then he wouldn’t be God.
  • Not from his essence Would need to exist prior to existence
  • Therefore, God’s essence is his existence

the resurrection of jesus christ

For Holy Week this year, we are going all out. Five episodes in five days! Today is episode 5 of 5.

Listen to Episode

This week we are examining common theories surrounding the resurrection of Jesus and hope to give our listeners something to chew on throughout the week. But first we have to establish the facts:

  1. Christ was tried by his enemies, convicted, and crucified to death.
  2. Shortly after his burial, Christ’s tomb was found to be empty.
  3. Many of the disciples (and also one or two skeptics) claimed to have seen Christ alive in the flesh, and interacted with him, following his death.
  4. Inspired by the belief in Christ’s bodily resurrection, the disciples initiated a movement that, despite persecutions and martyrdom, converted millions of people to a new way of life-based on Christ’s example and his teachings.

We’ve made it to the final episode of this marathon. Today we explore the last “theory” about Jesus: that he was tried, crucified, buried, and rose from the dead on the third day.

So now we have arrived at a theory that many have uttered: Christianity was made up. In other words, 12 clever men devised one of the world’s greatest religions in the span of 3 years. Spread it across the Roman empire. And were tortured, hunted, executed and imprisoned for their fake belief. Seems likely.

For Holy Week this year, we are going all out. Five episodes in five days! Today is episode 3 of 5.

Could it have “simply” been that the disciples and following eye witnesses (all 500 of them) were all hallucinating, at the same time, for 40 days?

* “You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh on account of the dead or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the Lord” (Lev. 19:28).
* Some tattoos could be morally permissible, but there are a number of points to take into consideration.

* What is the motive?
* Are the words or images “clean?”
* Are you putting yourself in any serious health risk?
* After getting inked (or pierced) do your body parts still function as normal?
* Will the tattoo offend family, friends, or acquaintances?
* Is the expense justified?

In this week’s episode Declan and Justin talk about the only Catholic Church approved method of family planning – Natural Family Planning (NFP)

natural-family-planning-via-popsugar-comNFP ain’t your grandma’s Rhythm Method. It’s a much more sophisticated (and scientific) method which involves tracking the Basal body temperature and cervical mucus patterns of the woman to determine her fertility time. If your goal is to get pregnant, you do the deed when she’s fertile, if your goal is to delay pregnancy, you hold off from having sex during that time.

Simple. Or is it?

Since Justin is in seminary, Declan guides the audience through some of the difficulties surrounding NFP and gives his reasoning why he believes the Catholic Church is correct in saying that NFP is the only true way a married couple can plan their family.

Listen to the episode

Show overview:

  • What the heck is NFP
  • This sounds like a church approved method of birth control, isn’t it the same thing?
    • Although birth control and NFP have the same “end” in mind, they differ in terms of the “means” of achieving it.
    • Contraception necessitates a step taken, a physical or chemical interference in the life-giving process of human sexuality.
    • NFP or fertility awareness is using one’s knowledge of fertility to delay contraception via self-control
  • Why is this a big deal?
  • The truth about NFP: It’s hard

After a few weeks of “downtime” Declan and Justin are back at it talking about something important to them both: Prayer.

What exactly is prayer? How do Catholics pray? And is pray effective? All of these questions, and many more, are answered in this episode of MBFTR!

A brief Catholic definitions of prayer according to the CCC (PRAYER IN THE CHRISTIAN LIFE):

  • 2558 “Great is the mystery of the faith!” The Church professes this mystery in the Apostles’ Creed (Part One) and celebrates it in the sacramental liturgy (Part Two), so that the life of the faithful may be conformed to Christ in the Holy Spirit to the glory of God the Father (Part Three). This mystery, then, requires that the faithful believe in it, that they celebrate it, and that they live from it in a vital and personal relationship with the living and true God. This relationship is prayer.
  • 2559: Humility is the foundation of prayer
  • 2560: Whether we realize it or not, prayer is the encounter of God’s thirst with ours.
  • 2561: Paradoxically our prayer of petition is a response to the plea of the living God
  • 2562: According to Scripture, it is the heart that prays
  • 2563: The heart is the dwelling-place where I am, where I live… It is the place of encounter, because as image of God we live in relation: it is the place of covenant.
  • 2564: Christian prayer is a covenant relationship between God and man in Christ.
  • 2565: Thus, the life of prayer is the habit of being in the presence of the thrice-holy God and in communion with him.

Three types of prayer:

  • Vocal
  • Meditation
  • Contemplation
